(Lilith’s Point of View)

After my connection to Jered’s dreamworld is severed, my tired mind easily slips into my own world of dreams. When I wake up, there’s very little that I recall about what my own subconscious made up to entertain me, but I remember every detail of the time I spent with Jered. The thought of him coming to my rescue makes me smile and fills my heart with hope that everything will turn out all right. I know he’ll be here as quickly as he can. All I have to do is be patient for a little while longer and keep Cal as safe as possible.

Movement comes from Cal’s direction, and I raise myself up off my side to peer over at him. He’s rummaging inside the bag of food Hale brought over earlier. After he pulls out a half-eaten wedge of cheddar cheese and a half-loaf of bread, he seems to notice that I’m watching him.

“Did I wake you up?” he asks, laying the bag in his hand down and walking over to me. I move my legs off the foam mattress so he can sit down beside me.

“I don’t think it was you,” I tell him as he breaks the bread in half and hands my share to me.

Cal leans my way and whispers in my ear. “When I woke up, I saw Hale peeking down here through the hole. I don’t see him now, but we might want to keep our voices low in case he’s still up there listening to our conversation. Were you able to make contact with Jered?”

“Yes, I did,” I whisper back, still glowing on the inside from our time together. “And I also gave him a distinctive landmark that he and the others should be able to use to find us.”

For the first time since I met him, Cal smiles with genuine happiness. However, his moment of joy is fleeting as his eyes are drawn to his blood-stained wings still hanging on the cave wall across from us. I asked Hale to remove his disgusting souvenir of Cal’s pain, but he didn’t. I’ll have to remind him that he promised to that for me. I can’t say I’m looking forward to him attempting to tease out hidden memories from my mind again. The last one I had was unsettling and slightly confusing. If what I saw back on the cliff was real, who or what was I running away from? How did I end up at the bottom of that cliff? I have even more questions about my previous life than I did before Hale took me there, but I’m not sure I want to discover the answers. Something deep inside my soul is warning me to stop searching for the truth. Our memories were wiped for a reason, and I fear learning the details surrounding my death will only bring me heartache.

Cal breaks the wedge of cheese in his hands in half and hands me my portion to eat with the bread.
